Since chanoyu (Japanese tea ceremony) was codified by Sen no Rikyu in the 16th Century, tea and art lovers have cherished the energizing and focusing properties of matcha. Literally translated to “ground tea” 抹茶 this ancient tradition has secured a prominent place on the world stage and, in recent years, enjoyed a surge in global popularity due to its health benefits and delectable flavor. Join us for "Standing on Ceremony," and allow us to introduce you to resolute pleasures of this ancestral elixir.

Sourced from the birthplace of matcha, Uji, Kyoto, Japan, our guests will explore three of our signature matcha grades guided by a host trained in the art of the Japanese Tea Ritual. This session offers a casual introduction to the world of matcha, inspiring aspirants to delve deeper into this rich and expansive world, some refer to as ‘the green beam’. We will become acquainted with the cultivation and processing of matcha, the traditional matcha equipt de table and learn to properly prepare a bowl of matcha.

Traditionally, matcha was utilized to foster unity among samurai and to create a space for profound communication between host and guest.
