No. 109, Tai Ping Hou Kui


      Wisp of Smoke ~ Squash ~ Bamboo ~ Gentle Floral

Grown high in the Yellow Mountains (Huang Shan) of Tai Ping Prefecture in Anhui Province, this vibrant green tea of elongated, slender leaves, translates to "Green Monkey Chief". The tea's unique appearance is created by pressing the leaves between steel mesh screens of during a low-fire baking process. A prominent, savory vegetal flavor reflects the mineral-rich terroir, with notes of squash, delicate flowers and a hint of smoke linger on the palate of this lovely, pale green brew. Unusual and rewarding.

Origin: Anhui Province, China

Picking Standard: 1 bud and 2 leaves

Brewing Instructions:  

  • 2 teaspoons (5-6 leaves) per 8oz/250ml of water  
  • 175ºF/80ºC (Bring fresh, cold spring water to a boil. Remove from heat, set aside 3 minutes, and proceed.)  
  • Brew 4-6 minutes  
  • Good for 2 infusions
